Environmental Policies

Environmental issues have become a mainstream concern. How we live now - perhaps more than any other time in our history - will have a significant influence on the future of the world. The unrelenting emphasis on "progress" and "development" has come at considerable cost; now we are witnessing many wake-up calls.

Robbie Svoboda, an American ayurvedic doctor, quotes his teacher thus:

"It is always better to live with reality, because otherwise, without fail, reality will come to live with you"

- Vimalananda

And in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, a text from nearly 2000 years ago, it is stated:

heyam duhkamanagatam (YS2.16)

"Anticipate and avoid difficulties yet to come"

Each of us has the possibility of making a positive difference. Now is an opportunity to heal rather than harm.

Yoga philosophy extends beyond what we do on the mat - it encompasses how we live our lives. This includes the way that we treat other people and other life, the way we use our energies, the footprints that we leave on the earth... It is up to each of us to consider how we can make changes and transform good ideas into concrete reality. We acknowledge that just as with any other practice, changes in thinking and then implementation can take time and effort. Sometimes we struggle with these issues; perhaps the main thing (as with all yoga practice) is to keep on trying.

Generally we endeavor to:

  • use sustainable sources of energy (e.g. solar power at home)
  • buy fair-traded products
  • support the local economy
  • use services which have stated ethical and environmental policies.
